Un-Framed: Performance Art and the Image

Images, either previously understood, or based on visions or ideas, play a crucial role in creative production. Stemming from the visual arts, the process of realizing performance art doesn’t lay outside of this scope. Un-framed: Performance Art and the Image will be an intensive, hands-on workshop based in theory and practice, entailing readings, exercises, discussions, and will accumulate in the creation of a new performance-based art work from each participant. Participants will be encouraged to approach performance art through the language of sculpture, drawing, and photography to better examine a nexus of time, space, the body, and creation of images. Additionally, we will consider the role of lens-based documentation in live visual performance art and its effects on temporality.

Although this workshop will be considered through the discourse of visual art, interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Goals of Workshop:

-Expose participants to a brief historical trajectory of visual related performance art works, artists, and events.

-Encourage participants to approach, or experiment with, performance art through methodologies understood via painting, drawing, sculpture, video, or photography.

-To work towards an expansive understanding of time, space, and body-awareness through various exercises in mental strength and duration.

-Provide a platform for the realization of new and profound performance-based works.

About the Facilitator:

Ryan Hawk is a visual artist, curator, and arts organizer focusing in performance, video, sculpture, and drawing. Hawk’s work has been shown in several venues throughout New York, Boston, exhibited at Chicago’s Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival, Select Industries at Miami Basel 2012, and several international performance art festivals. Ryan Hawk received his BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and is currently a Resident Artist at Box 13 Art Space in Houston, TX.
